The Alberta Catholic School Board curriculum differs from
that of the Public by its inclusion of Religious Education. Here is an outline
of the topics and activities you can expect to see in the Religious Education
class.
Going into Grade 6:
The focus of the Grade 6 Religious Education Program is the
living a moral life as a young Christian. It aims to explore how young
Christians are witnesses to God’s love, based on the bible.
The units will be:
11.
“You are my friends.”: Discover God’s love in
our friendships and that moral life is based on love and good friendships.
22.
“I love you with an everlasting love.”: Learn
how when other come to us as the image of God it invokes a moral response.
33.
“I shall be your God; you shall be my people.”:
Learn the meaning of a covenant and learn how Jesus summarized the Ten
Commandments.
44.
“God so loved the world.”: Discover what it
means to keep a covenant with God and meet the prophet Isaiah.
55.
“I am the way, the truth and the life.”: Reflect
on Christmas and world issues of justice and injustice.
66.
“Love your enemies.”: Examine justice issues
through the Beatitudes.
77.
“What you do to the least of my brothers and
sisters.”: Explore Lent and how to meet Christ in the poor through mercy.
88.
“No greater love.”: Through Jesus’s death
explore what is forgiveness.
99.
“Do not be afraid.”: Celebrate the risen Lord
and reflect on sacraments of initiation.
110.
“You shall be my witnesses.” : Explore what is a
moral witness of the Holy Spirit and how it can be applied in their lives.
Some examples of projects and activities that could be done are: learning to apply the Ten Commandments to real life situations, writing a covenant with God, organize a Christmas celebration at the school, helping those less fortunate during Lent.
