Social Studies: A focus on Global Citizenship and Identity
The Alberta Program of studies has an overarching focus on Citizenship, identity, and heritage. Moreover, the Social Studies program encourages becoming responsible and active citizens in both a local and a global context. For this to become a reality, it is important understand the heritage, as well as the historical background of the country/city we live in presently. The recognition of minority and subordinate classes within our communities, and what we can do to improve the world we live in, is an important value of Alberta’s Social studies Program. From this, the program endorses the inclusion of students in community and heritage programs to insight a change on a community or global scale. As educators, it is important to promote a pluralistic and multicultural perspective to every student. Furthermore, it is imperative that parents and teachers work as a team to bridge the gap between traditionalist perspectives and the pluralistic perspective that the Alberta program of study promotes.
In the Program rational and philosophy, “The Alberta Social Studies Kindergarten to Grade 12 Program of Studies meets the needs and reflects the nature of 21st century learners. It has at its heart the concepts of citizenship and identity in the Canadian context. The program reflects multiple perspectives, including Aboriginal and Francophone, that contribute to Canada's evolving realities”(http://www.learnalberta.ca/ProgramOfStudy.aspx?lang=en&ProgramId=564423#178733). The program emphasizes the need for social cohesion and effective functioning of society. It also promotes a sense of belonging and understanding among students to understand our past, to better our future.
