Catholic School Board Curriculum Grade 5

The Alberta Catholic School Board curriculum differs from that of the Public by its inclusion of Religious Education. Here is an outline of the topics and activities you can expect to see in the Religious Education class.

Going into grade 5:
The focus of the grade 5 Religious Education program is to help students understand the role of the Church in expressing their faith. It will focus on the idea that the Church gathers people from all nations by the spirit of God. In Church, Lord Jesus is present through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The units will be:

11.      The Church proclaims the Good News: We are made and chosen by God.
22.       The Church believes in the Lord Jesus: Exploring the Acts of the Apostles and steps of Christian initiation.
33.       The Church celebrates God’s mighty deeds: Exploring the structure and planning a Eucharist celebration.
44.       The Church expects the coming of the Lord: Experience Advent and pray to Mary.
55.       The Church welcomes all nations: Celebrate Epiphany and learn about Church in Canada
66.       The Church acts justly: Discover service to others, respect for all creation and compassion for the disadvantaged.
77.       The Church reconciles:  Reflection on Lent as preparation for Easter and on the sacrament of Reconciliation.
88.       The Church loves: Deepen their understanding of the Chrism mass, the passion of Jesus, the Easter Triduum and the sacrament of Holy Orders
99.       The Church rejoices: Meaning of Easter and how Canada has been changed by God’s love.
110.   The Church witnesses: Explore God’s purpose and love through the missionary journeys of Paul

Some examples of projects or activities that could be done in class are: helping with a school Celebration (ex. Advent, Lent, Easter), get involved with a volunteer activity, outlining the different steps of Christian initiation and the purpose for each, research on a significant Church figure in Canadian History.
